Jailbreaking IOS 8 may seem daunting or even potentially dangerous, but actually, with the right knowledge and jailbreaking app it is quick and painless. There are also many potential benefits to jailbreaking IOS 8 like being able to fully customize your phone and altering the default apps and settings to increase your use and enjoyment of them. For these reasons, jailbreaking has become increasingly popular among Apple users and this article will explain everything you need to know about jailbreaking and how to jailbreak your device safely and successfully.
What is Jailbreaking?
With every Apple device, Apple has created security measures so that the apps on your phone cannot be changed without their approval. Along the same lines, Apple also reviews every app before it is made available in the App Store. Generally, this means that you are protected from downloading any harmful or malicious apps. However, Apple tightly controls certain aspects of IOS and does not allow users to tweak them.
Jailbreaking allows you to overcome these restrictions and installs an app known as Cydia. Cydia is like an alternate version of the App Store which allows third party apps and tweaks to nearly every aspect of your Apple device.
Legality, Safety, and Warranty
One of the most common concerns about jailbreaking is whether it is legal or not. In the United States, and in quite a few other countries, it is generally considered legal. Even in countries where jailbreaking is illegal, Apple has never sued anyone so there is nothing to fear.
While jailbreaking is generally safe and will not damage your device even if it fails, the one negative consequence to be aware of is that you do void your warranty with Apple when you jailbreak. Obviously, you should also expect that Apple will not offer much help with any unapproved apps you download after jailbreaking as well. So you should consider this risk before deciding to jailbreak.
Currently, there are multiple ways to jailbreak IOS 8, but the safest and most widely used is Pangu8. Pangu8 does require that you have a desktop or laptop computer to download the jailbreaking software and then you have to connect your device to the computer.
Another advantage of Pangu8 is that it is an untethered jailbreak. This means that you will only need to jailbreak your device again whenever you decide to download a new update for IOS that Apple releases.
Pangu8 currently supports IOS 8.0, IOS 8.1 and IOS 8.1.1 and the makers of Pangu8 update it frequently to keep up to date with Apple’s updates as well. Pangu8 is free and available for download at: http://en.pangu.io/.
Chances are good you already have it and use it regularly, but you also should have iTunes installed on your computer as well as a cable to connect your Apple device to the computer. Before you jailbreak, it is highly recommended that you back up your device through iTunes. This will allow you to restore your Apple device should the jailbreak fail or to enable you to revert back to a non-jailbroken device if you desire.
Save yourself time and hassle by using the Back Up feature in iTunes.
In addition, before you start the jailbreak, you will want to set your device to airplane mode. Turning off the “Find my iPhone” feature in system settings will also make your jailbreak more likely to succeed. If you forget to disable these features, Pangu8 will ask you do so before it begins the IOS 8 jailbreaking process.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that during the installation process, your Apple device may give a message that the memory is almost full. Pangu8 rewrites some important software as it jailbreaks, but it does not actually fill the memory of your device.
- Once you are ready to jailbreak, you need to download Pangu8 to your computer or laptop. Make sure to get Windows or Mac, whichever matches the operating system you’re using.
- Once Pangu8 is downloaded, double click on the DMG file to extract the app and save it on your Desktop.
- After Pangu8 is added to your Desktop, open it. Then plug your Apple device into your computer using the normal cable.
- Next, you will need to follow the instructions Pangu8 gives, unlock your device and select “trust.” Then Pangu8 will figure out what your device model is and what firmware version you currently have installed.
- After a short time, Pangu8 will ask you to set your device to airplane mode and once you have done that, it will begin the jailbreak. This process takes a few minutes and you do not need to do anything until your device shows a slide to upgrade button on screen. After you do this, your device will reboot and you will have Pangu and Cydia installed onto your Apple device (3).
Once you have jailbroken your phone, Cydia and Pangu will be installed.
While installing Pangu8 is usually quick and easy, if the installation fails consider trying the following strategies to successfully jailbreak IOS 8. The first thing to do if the installation fails is to try opening and installing Pangu8 again. If this does not work, then try rebooting both your Apple device and the computer you’re using and then try jailbreaking again. Finally, if it still does not work use the restore function in Pangu8 to restore the device and then try again.
After the Jailbreak
Once you have successfully jailbroken IOS 8 on your Apple device, you can access Cydia and browse the different apps and tweaks you could not use before. There is an entire world beyond the App Store and as long as you research apps before you download them, you will find customizing and unlocking your device’s full potential to be a very enjoyable experience.
